Robby

Robby was the outdoor Mars Rover Prototype. It was built at JPL in 1988 & 1989. The tires are one meter in diameter. The robot carries several cameras on a pan tilt head. The robot was used to explore a variety of autonomous and teleoperation navigation control techniques. Robby made some of the first autonomous traverses over very rough terrain. Some of the people that helped build and program Robby are: Brian Cooper, Jim Firby, Erann Gat, Larry Matthies, Andy Mishkin, David Miller, Marc Slack, Brian Wilcox, and many others.
